They say we are faceless, but they misunderstand. We are every face. And in the end, that is our strength and their fear.
—Lelith of the House of Dak, as recorded in "the Hidden Memoirs"
The mysterious Changelings are outcasts from society, reviled for their power to change their shape and appearance. Changelings are cautious, skeptical, and even-tempered, with delicate but flexible bodies, hailing principally from the Shadowvale. They feel at home in the shadows or as faceless members of a crowd. Little is known of their people or their ways, but it is said a Changeling is a powerful ally to have.
The Changelings are perhaps the least known of all races in the world. No one in recorded history who has attempted to enter the realm of the Changelings has returned from their society in the Shadowvale. It is believed that the Changelings, like the High People, are organized into "houses" or families that contain some lineal pedigree. It is also believed that the Changelings, Daemon, and High People all share some common ancestry that predates humanity. The Changelings worship the Rasan Pantheon.
Some Changelings, either outcasts or scouts from their culture, do business with the rest of the world in a purely transactional fashion. They take up posts that are only whispered about among Graybreakers, for example, favoring the discreetness of such membership in the guild. Others work secretly in the courts of even more powerful factions, such as within the clergy of the Church of Avestar, to manipulate human politics from behind their faces.
Changelings are believed to reach maturity within a hundred years of age, and texts describing encounters with Changelings who served among humans suggest they live for at least hundreds of years. As such, their longevity is hotly debated among scholars in the Library of Ambion. The Changeling ability to shapechange is limited to the shifting of their body shape into other bipedal forms. They cannot increase or decrease their mass, or significantly alter their size. Furthermore, it is beyond the ability of a Changeling to perfectly imitate the appearance of any particular person. This change is physiological and doesn't involve illusions or enchantments. Changelings are able to sense the presence of other Changelings, even if they are unable to perceive their true forms.
It is rumored that the Changelings abide by a sacred law, "Our Face as One Face," that decrees no Changeling may kill another Changeling, and that any who violate this law are to be exiled from Changeling society.
