A Quest of Queens—Lore

The High People

The High People (also called the Yevim) are believed to have been created by the goddess Yevna. Being direct creations of Yevna, they are endowed with the divine power of their goddess, which makes them seemingly immortal. The High People live on the floating continent Muraius, which is ruled by a theocracy of clerical Intercessors and a Queen. Yevim are physically weaker than other races and have hollow bones, due the lower gravity on Muraius. Their evolution under the radiance of the God Tree and the Great Crystal, however, grants them heightened intelligence and a natural affinity for magic.

The Great Crystal

Yevim immortality stems from the sacred power of Yevna, whose physical manifestation in the world is the God Tree. Historians speculate that Yevna's "divine" power is akin to, if not interchangeable with, the power of lodestones, and some believe that the Great Crystal itself—the embedded heart of the God Tree—is an extremely powerful lodestone of its own kind. The radiant presence of its magic in this way sustains Yevim immortality, as it is said in the Scrolls of Elsene that when a population of Yevim left Muraius to reside on the surface of the planet at the start after humankind cast out the children of Asag, "under the cosmic light of Mushtarie, they were transformed," suggesting that these Yevim became humans over the course of subsequent millennia.

Yevim Immortality

The subject of male and female bonding among the Yevim is little known to all except the Yevim themselves. One theory holds that Yevim females draw their youth by (passively) feeding on the youth of the males in their society. Yevim females either do not age at all, or age at a rate so imperceptible as to be unrecorded in the annals of history. Elsene, for example, lived for tens of thousands of years, and other queens that followed her had lifetimes approaching a millennia or more. Their deaths were either untimely or self-determined.

Male Intercessors, however, display the effects of aging after several hundred years, reaching senescence at nearly half a millennium. Death comes for them naturally, despite the sustaining power of the God Tree.
