A Quest of QueensLore

Lords of Men

In the halls of Moongarm, the Lords of Men laid down their crowns not in submission, but in unity. To rule justly was to rule together. We forget this truth at our peril.

—from "the Coronation of Peace," quoting Lord Paimon

The Lords of Men are the sovereigns of Midworld’s many realms, a patchwork of monarchs, chieftains, and governors whose histories are as diverse as the lands they rule. Their legacy stretches back to the earliest days of humanity’s struggle for survival against the children of Asag, a time when the earth itself was hostile. In those ancient days, humanity’s ancestors united under the shadow of chaos, driving Asag’s brood into the Northern Wastes and claiming the earth as their own.

For a thousand years, the Lords of Men shared Midworld with the High People, whose dominion over the skies ensured a fragile peace. This coexistence reached its zenith with the forging of the Lords’ Alliance, a covenant of unity brokered by a Justicar of the High People in the hallowed halls of Castle Moongarm. The Alliance was not merely a political pact; it was a sacred oath that bound the Lords to refrain from warring over the territories of Midworld, ensuring their cooperation.

The Lords’ Alliance marked an age of prosperity, with Castle Moongarm standing as a symbol of unity. However, the fall of the Great Crystal and the High People’s retreat shattered this golden age. With the High People no longer serving as stewards, human ambition turned inward, and the Alliance fractured under the weight of greed. Lord Gazreth’s rise to power, his slaying of Lord Paimon, and the breaking of the Alliance to form the Arcadian Empire marked the end of unity and the beginning of an age of strife.

Today, the Lords of Men are scattered, their loyalties divided between factions vying for dominion over Midworld. Some cling to the ideals of the Alliance, resisting Arcadia’s expansion and seeking to restore what was lost. Others serve the Empire, seduced by promises of power or cowed by its might. The Lords of Men remain a force to be reckoned with, but their fragmented nature raises questions about whether they can ever reclaim their place as true stewards of the earth.
