AI Statement of Use
On this page you’ll find an expanded position statement on the use of generative AI (genAI) in OSR+. This statement is not intended for ideological extremists on either side of the AI debate. If you're a hardline anti-AI activist or pro-AI accelerationist, this statement may not be for you.
What follows are the views of OSR+'s creator (that's me, Daniel Quinn), and I'll do my best to answer all your questions regarding our use of genAI in our system. While my co-creators largely agree with my views, they may have a difference of opinion on one or more points outlined below, so I can't speak for them fully. In fact, some of them think I am making a grave mistake by writing this statement for public consumption, but I believe I must be honest and transparent about my relationship to technology and its influence on my creative process. For this reason, the remainder of this statement is written in the first person.
In Brief
1.
I believe: The ethical implications of the use of genAI is more nuanced than either extremist take on AI: that “All use of AI is unethical” (anti-AI) or the utilitarian view that “the use of AI is an unquestioned good that must be pursued at all costs” (accelerationist). It’s more complicated than this, and it's worth discussing why.
2.
I believe: The use of AI has massive upsides and massive downsides, but the creative potential it offers to independent creators such as myself outweigh those downsides, which are largely misunderstood or exaggerated.
3.
I believe: Organizations that categorically ban any work incorporating AI are not taking the long view when it comes to the future of this technology and its integration with society at large. This technology is revolutionary, and will transform our industry, for better or for worse. It’s not going away, it’s not a fad or a bubble, and though I use it every day, it still terrifies and amazes me. We must grapple with the implications of its use, because its incorporation into every facet of our lives is inevitable and cannot be avoided forever.
