Avoid looking after destinies, Princess. The road ahead of you will always be unpaved.
—Captain Gideon Fane, to Nyn during their Journey through the Fields of Woe
Captain Gideon Fane was a mentor to countless paladins at the esteemed Academy of Dexien. His faith in the Empire crumbled as he slowly witnessed the cruelty of its theocratic regime spread across Arcadia. The horrors committed in the Congress of Judges turned a man of quiet authority into a traitor to the Empire; he secretly abandoned his commission and joined the Returners, lending his tactical expertise to the resistance behind closed doors.
Gideon is a practiced soldier and experienced tactician with a wealth of knowledge of Imperial operations. The Captain spent many years within the Academy, preaching Imperial ideology to young recruits while providing a back channel to the Prince Regent on the Empire's activities. The stress of leading this double life took a toll on the man, aging him beyond his years, but his belief in the integrity of the realm was stronger than his regret over holding the post. Even when he oversaw Imperial action that endangered the lives of the rebels he secretly supported, he persisted.
After the Prince's death, Gideon sank into a deep depression, questioning whether the doomed rebellion was worth daily training fascists to fight for the mad Emperor. Only when word of the survival of the Queen Who Lives reached the Academy did Gideon regain hope for the future of the rebellion.
