The unadorned caravan appears to be nothing more than a bunch of carts hitched together by Mora gypsies. It is said wherever the caravan goes, a massive carnival of kaleidoscopic delights follows, captivating whatever town or city it visits.

According to the sages at Ambion, the caravan is hosted by a mysterious sorcerer known only as the Wizard in the West. Some believe he is an ancient archmage, perhaps belonging to the High People, who abandoned his luxurious perch in the Magic City to wander the earth bringing joy to its people.

Others suggest that he may be the Artificer, the very one who created the first Clockwerk heart and thus gave birth to their race. Whatever the case, his carnival lasts for a single night, once a decade in a random city, then disappears again to be unseen for as many years.

Story Hook

The Kaleidoscope Caravan can be interpreted in any number of ways, and as an adventure hook can serve as a wandering MacGuffin for the party to pursue. In the official Quest of Queens OSR+ campaign, the party is searching for the Wizard in the West because they believe he is the only one who can interpret the Scrolls of Elsene. These Scrolls are legended to possess the knowledge to reconstitute the Great Crystal. We learn that the “caravan” is in fact merely the harbinger of the carnival itself: a magical realm that exists out of time, where the Wizard in the West and his revelers reside.

Because the caravan is likely to contain all sorts of exotic wares, it is a perfect place to hide wondrous things, like lost artifacts, secret knowledge, or even people lost to time.
