They came in silence, clad in argent light, and took the children from our homes. We were told they would live among gods, but what god has need of such cruelty?
—Faran Hadeem, Recorded from the Oral Traditions of the Mamaran Tribes
In the golden age of the High People’s reign, the Caretakers were an institution of children taken from the mortal races of Midworld to Muraius to serve as custodians of its magic gardens beneath the God Tree. The Scrolls of Elsene recount that this was not an act of slavery, but divine appointment: the children were granted supernatural longevity and imbued with arcane wisdom, becoming living repositories of Yevna’s sacred truths.
Raised in hermetic isolation, the Caretakers were forbidden from forming bonds or attachments to their mortal origins. This separation was said to make them pure vessels of Yevna’s will, unmarred by the conflicts and desires of ordinary life. Under the tutelage of the High People’s Intercessors, the Caretakers learned the locations of the ley lines, the flows of magic connecting the world below, and the secrets of the God Tree’s power, which they tended with unwavering devotion.

The legacy of the Caretakers remains controversial. To the High People, they were divine instruments, essential in the upkeep of Muraius’ magical supremacy over the world. To those on Midworld, the Caretakers were stolen kin, indoctrinated into a system that stripped them of choice. With the Fall of Muraius, many Caretakers were left stranded in the world below, their purpose unraveled as their immortal lives caught up with them in exile. Some wander still, seeking purpose; others have turned bitter, wielding their knowledge as a weapon against those who wronged them.
