Fire is as much about control as it is about destruction.
—Barbara Keladon
The gutterborn pyrokineticist Barbara Keladon never knew peace growing up in the chaos of a nascent Empire. She was raised by single mother Desdemona Keladon, whose husband and extended family all fell victim to Imperial conquest. Her mother harbored the same psychic gift as Barbara, and though she taught her daughter to do her best to hide her powers from prying eyes, both were hunted by the Inquisitors as part of their program to create Prophets for the Congress of Judges.
After her mother’s capture and death, Barbara survived on the margins, learning to fend off the Empire’s agents with her growing psychic abilities. She ultimately found mentorship with Syndicate mercenary Mister Loan (also known as Kazarius, the Tarth son of the Highgaard Kazalin), who taught her how to transform her inner turmoil into a weapon to protect herself. Her early adventures with Kazarius earned her the nom de guerre "The Scarlet Flame," after her signature crimson curls and fiery persona.
When Barbara rejoined Mister Loan in the years following his allegiance to Princess Nyn, she found her new purpose in the Queen Who Lives' quest to restore balance in the Midworld. Yet all the while, she remains pursued by the sinister High Person Luther, an Imperial agent tasked with recruiting candidates for the Congress. His fascination with Barbara and mysterious connection to her mother fills the young psychic with dread, as she grapples with the apparent false memories he's planted in her mind, and the clouded truth of her past.
