Dmitri’s journey to becoming one of Barbara Keladon’s apprentices began with disillusionment. Once a staunch believer in the Empire’s promises of order and strength, Dmitri’s loyalty fractured when he witnessed firsthand the cost of serving the Emperor: his nephew and loyal squire, whom he raised out of poverty, lost his life under Dmitri's care in a meaningless skirmish. The battle awakened Dmitri's latent psionic abilities, and his defection was an impulse decision.

Unfortunately, the Inquisitors took note and brought him into the Congress as a candidate for Prophethood. When Barbara rescued him from the Congress of Judges, she recognized his military expertise and offered him a chance to atone like she did, in the service of a higher cause.

Though Dmitri is a competent soldier, he struggles to shake the psychological impact of his past misdeeds. In his fellow apprentice Josef, he sees the same brashness as his nephew, and in Swift Claw's military adroitness, a familiarity free of Imperial influence. Dmitri's desire to atone for his past makes him a steadfast ally, but sometimes drives him to overreach as he takes on burdens meant to be shared. The lonely road to redemption, he must realize, is best traveled with like minds.

Adventure Hook

Dmtri masks his guilt with a dark sense of humor, but his loyalty to the party hinges on his ability to reconcile with his past. Can Barbara’s mentorship help him come to terms with the psychological harm the Empire inflicted upon him?

A routine mission brings the party to Zorath Ridge, where Dmitri’s unit once suffered heavy casualties in a failed campaign. Strange apparitions begin to haunt Dmitri, and he reveals that the battle’s tragic outcome was due to an order he was forced to carry out.

Are the apparitions supernatural, or is someone manipulating Dmitri’s guilt?
