Josef Iscariot's youthful beauty is born of a dark secret that he's hidden from everyone, including himself. Barbara Keladon rescued him from the Congress of Judges among his fellow apprentices: Swift Claw and Dmitri Ilatar. Brash, waifish, and sharp-tongued, Josef acts like a mean girl to keep people at a distance.
Josef lived as a fugitive of the Empire since he was a child. His psychic talents manifested after he reached adolescence, drawing the attention of the Inquisitors in his hometown. Fleeing persecution, Josef survived by seducing lonely nobles and virile warriors, most notably the Prince of Mamara, who fell into disfavor with the Caliphate as a result of the tryst. But it wasn't until later in life that Josef came to realize that his empathic powers had the effect of draining the longevity of those he became closest too—keeping him youthful at the expense of shortening the lifespan of his lovers.
Josef's relationship with his fellow apprentices is complex; he finds comfort in Dmitri treating him like a little brother, but feels stifled by his military rigidity. Swift Claw, on the other hand, is intimidating but also oddly reassuring, especially when she reigns him in. Above all, Barbara's willingness to take him on as her apprentice without judgment has earned her his highest respect as he privately searches for a way to come to terms with the dark side of his powers.
