Zed of the House of Vek is a Changeling who walks a fine line between friend and foe. Cast out by his own people for breaking their sacred code, Zed carries the weight of his House’s ruin and the shards of the Heart of Asag, a shattered Great Crystal that once belonged to the Changelings. Driven by a desire to restore the Heart and, perhaps, redeem himself in the eyes of his kin, Zed can be a reluctant ally and a dangerous addition in any adventuring party.
Once a member of the prominent Changeling House of Vek, he defied the sacred creed “Our Face as One Face” when he killed the lord of a rival house in a moment of desperation. Exiled and hunted, he stole the Knife—an artifact of his people—and began his quest to gather the scattered shards of the Changeling Great Crystal. Along the way, he has outwitted enemies, brokered tenuous alliances, and uncovered forgotten truths about the High People and the Changelings.
Despite his aloof demeanor, Zed possesses a cunning intellect He speaks in half-truths and uses humor as a shield, forcing those around him to question their assumptions about him. His motives often appear opaque, but his actions suggest a complex mix of self-interest, loyalty, and an almost painful hope for a better future. Zed’s presence in the party can both a boon and a challenge, as his goals do not always align with those of his companions.
Zed’s quest to rebuild the Heart of Asag places him at odds with the Queen Who Lives, whose mission may involve restoring the Great Crystal. Yet, he seems genuinely invested in helping—for reasons he guards as jealously as the shards he collects. Whether his ultimate goal is reconciliation, domination, or something else entirely remains to be seen.
