Mercy isn’t weakness. It’s the courage to see the humanity in the enemy’s eyes, even when they cannot see it in yours.
—Fodel Bersk, THE LAST CLERIC OF ABRAXIS
Fodel Bersk is known as "the last cleric of Abraxis," a man out of time whose return to the World of Ruin signals the renewal of old faiths lost to the modern world. A native of Idania, Fodel’s early life was upended during the Empire’s occupation of his province. He and Lord Paimon worked together to broker a peace for Idania's lords by marrying a young noble daughter, who was his ward, into the Imperial line. When that stratagem fell apart, the entire Idanian noble family was executed, and the province absorbed by the Emperor. As the temples of Abraxis burned, Fodel fled into the wilds consumed by grief, where he stumbled upon a Mora caravan who were traveling into the Kaleidoscope Carnival.
There, the mystical revelries of the Wizard in the West offered him refuge, but at the cost of his memories. It wasn't until he met the ever-curious Goom the Sage that the folly of lingering in this liminal purgatory was revealed to him: Fodel learned that some eighty-plus years passed outside the Carnival, and that the world needed his mercy more than his guilt. Though Fodel returned diminished, he found a renewed purpose: to heal, inspire, and help others resist the Empire's tyranny, as he had tried to do in his youth.
Draped in tattered white and gold robes, Fodel is an unassuming man—neither towering nor frail, with a kind smile. He is never without his reliquary shillelagh, upon which are etched the holy sigils of the Bowed God. A tightly wound cord of his ward's prayer beads encircles his left wrist, each bead a memento of lives he failed to save in Idania—a constant reminder of the price of his failure.
