The smoke of the Braziers lingers in the air, an eternal reminder that faith, like fire, consumes before it illuminates.
—Bishop Ivaron of Grael Fastness
The Braziers of Avestar, crafted from enchanted brass, are said to be touched by the God Avestar, capable of summoning His avatar into the material realm when lit. These massive cauldrons serve a dual purpose: as tools of divine communion, and as the proving grounds for creation of the Prophets, the chosen vessels of Avestar’s will.
The creation of a Prophet is a ritual that involves bringing candidates before the Brazier to witness the summoning of the One God’s avatar. The unworthy are reduced to ash, while others are left blinded or physically marred. Only a few emerge transformed, and they are said to be granted prophetic power that binds them irrevocably to the will of Avestar. These individuals often carry scars of their transformation, their bodies and minds altered to reflect the divine power they channel.
The rumor within the Emperor's inner circle is that a Prophet can be resurrected by his body being burned again in the Brazier that created him. But that miraculous power is perhaps the least important function of a Brazier: they are also symbols of theocratic power, in that each of the Arcadian gods once possessed a Brazier built in their image—except that those belonging to Mushtarie and Abraxis have fallen into disuse. Such Braziers may have alternaive powers, but they have been toppled by the schism and their locations hidden by the newly appointed Imperial faith.
