Handsomebeef? An odd name, to be sure. But I sense a nobility in him that belies his bumbling demeanor. The gods work in mysterious ways.
—Tyro, Archpriest of the Icalde
Engelbert Handsomebeef was once a renowned bard in the city of Tarth, known for his soaring voice and skill with the lute. However, an ill-advised dalliance with the daughter of a prominent Runeseer led to his disgrace and exile.
Cast out from Tarth society, Engelbert wandered the wilds of Farlas, using his music to earn meager coin in roadside taverns. Over time, the shame of his banishment festered into bitterness. He took to drowning his sorrows in ale and resentment, his performances becoming increasingly erratic.
It was in this sorry state that Kranmanouk found him, drunk and pitiless, in a gutter in Vaarta. The disgraced Highgaard saw in Engelbert a chance for redemption—not just for the bard, but for all the dishonored Tarth. Kranmanouk challenged Engelbert to reclaim his lost honor by aiding Kazarius in his sacred quest.
Though reluctant at first, Engelbert soon found new purpose in this noble undertaking. His clever tongue proved invaluable in navigating the treacherous politics of Tarth, while his music lifted the spirits of the downtrodden. Through trials and self-reflection, Engelbert slowly regained his sense of worth, transforming from a self-pitying drunkard into a true hero.
