Core Rules
It's tough to get started with a new system, so our free quickstart rules will include cheat sheets for both players and GMs, an abridged core rulesbook (in PDF form and on the website), and a sample adventure called Faht Bottom Inn that introduces players to the core mechanics.
The Core Fantasy Rules are the result of four years of playtesting and provide the mechanics for running OSR+ in fantasy campaign settings. You can access these core rules on our website for free, as well as use them in the Character Creator to make heroes.
This 200+ page tome is a soup-to-nuts guide on how to run games in OSR+. You can read the Game Master's Guide for free on the OSR+ website, and it includes guidance on how to create your own adventures for OSR+ and general advice for game masters on how to run their tables.
The Bestiary is a free archive of 330+ iconic monsters on the OSR+ website. Each monster includes its stats, ecology, and art.
Suborigins introduce additional fantasy races (known as origins in OSR+) that are variants of the eight standard origins in the Core Fantasy ruleset. These rules will be available on the website for free, and accessible in the Character Creator by premium subscribers. For example, the "Faulin" are a variant of the Tarth with their own alternative talents. Suborigins allow for even more diversity of character concepts.
The spells currently live on OSR+ represent only a tiny fraction of those available that we plan to release in the future. Each expanson pack adds an additional 300 to 500 spells that you can browse on the website or add to your sheets in the Character Creator (for premium users).
In OSR+, the mechanics don't support heroes leveling beyond level 10. These rules for high level play explore what it looks like to break that ceiling by acquiring multiple kits and/or multiple classes. Advice for game masters include how to design adventures for high level heroes.
Running a base of operations for your heroes is a downtime activity that can help build bonds in the party. It's also a fun minigame unto itself. Harkening back to old school strongholds, OSR+ lair mechanics detail downtime actions for building and operating the party's lair, whether it's a laboratory, underwater dungeon, or sky castle.
This SRD (System Reference Document) would provide a license to produce and publish your own content using the OSR+ core rules.
The Core Fantasy Rules are only the beginning for OSR+, as the system is intended to serve three pillars of tabletop gaming: fantasy, scifi, and modern/superhero. The Core Scifi Rules would introduce new classes, skills, origins, kits, and all the baseline rules necessary for running campaign settings set in the distant future. The OSR+ website, Character Creator, and all planned digital tools already support porting in alternative core rules, and every core rules set will be free to use for non-subscribers.
The Core Fantasy Rules are only the beginning for OSR+, as the system is intended to serve three pillars of tabletop gaming: fantasy, scifi, and modern/superhero. The Core Modern Rules would introduce new classes, skills, origins, kits, and all the baseline rules necessary for running campaign settings set in modern day environments (think superhero fantasy, modern day spy thrillers, or supernatural fiction like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or the X-Files). The OSR+ website, Character Creator, and all planned digital tools already support porting in alternative core rules, and every core rules set will be free to use for non-subscribers.
Character Creator
The Character Creator lets you build heroes in minutes on the OSR+ website and generates a mobile-friendly, digital character sheet you can update on any Internet-capable device. Select from tens of thousands of character portraits and create over 4000 combinations of character concepts. All of the core rules are available in the Creator, and all users can create unlimited heroes. Premium subscribers get access to rules from all the Worlds of OSR+, as well as the ability to save heroes privately in their account.
When declaring supplies as items or adding items to your inventory in the Character Creator, wouldn't it be nice to have a bank of icons to choose from to make your item visually match up with the thing it is you're declaring? This update adds an extended icon bank of images, with everything from pets to ukeleles.
Have you ever wanted to wield a harp as a heavy weapon? A guitar as a missile weapon? This fun suite of premium weapon styles add some flavor to the Bard class' inventory in the Character Creator.
This premium feature allows you to export and import your hero as a portable (JSON) file in the Character Creator, so you can back up your character on your computer and use it offline.
This enhancement to the Character Creator allows premium subscribers to create alternate versions of their heroes. For example, you could make a version of your hero at level 3 and level 6 with different selections in each sheet, and switch between these versions rather than having two copies of the same hero in your account.
Rapidly generate fully featured NPCs with the click of a button in the Character Creator. Useful for GMs who need heroes on the fly, or players looking for a creative challenge.
With the advent of AI image generation technology, it's only a matter of time before generation costs become cheap enough that we can incorporate it into the Character Creator. This will be a premium feature that allows you to generate unique avatars from within the Creator using Stable Diffusion technology. Each World of OSR+ will include its own unique style, allowing GMs to generate NPCs with a consistent look and players to create a party that looks like it was drawn by the same artist.
Digital Tools
The Character Creator lets you build heroes in minutes on the OSR+ website and generates a mobile-friendly, digital character sheet you can update on any Internet-capable device. Select from tens of thousands of character portraits and create over 4000 combinations of character concepts. All of the core rules are available in the Creator, and all users can create unlimited heroes. Premium subscribers get access to rules from all the Worlds of OSR+, as well as the ability to save heroes privately in their account.
This digital tool enhances the Character Creator to allow you to create monstrous NPCs with their own unique digital character sheets from a standardized set of monster perks and other abilities. Monsters are automatically leveled as you choose perks, and you can generate NPC shorthand to make running monsters in encounters easy. Premium accounts are able to save homebrewed monsters as private in their account. The tool draws upon the Beastiary, a complete collection of all the iconic monsters you'd expect from a fantasy RPG.
Generating poisons in OSR+ can be done with a simple table, but this tool lets you construct a homebrew poison without any fuss. Premium subscribers can also save homebrew poisons to their account for use in their adventures and with their character sheets.
This GM's aid is a digital tool that's all about getting fine-tuned results from random tables of OSR+ content. For example, you can apply filter conditions and randomization weights to zero-in on a subset of treasures or spells and yield random results (useful when building NPCs or treasure hoards).
This guided, visual questionnaire uses tarot cards to help players determine the ethos of their heroes. This standalone digital tool can be used inside and outside the Character Creator.
Session zero is a sacred process in OSR+ that sets the table up for success. We detail the session zero process in our Game Master's Guide at length, but this free digital tool walks you through dolling out bonds and story hooks in a simple question-and-answer interface.
A extension of the Character Creator, this tool lets you build your airship character sheets using the airship mechanics in OSR+. Premium users can save private sheets and access expanded content from the Worlds of OSR+.
This digital tool, much like the Character Creator, generates sheets for "lairs"—bases of operations for your heroes such as castles, hideoutsm and manors. Lair sheets make use of the mechanics that govern building a base of operations in OSR+ with unique abilities and story tags. Premium subscribers can save private lairs and access all mechanics from all Worlds of OSR+.
Pen & Paper
OSR+ has always been a digital-first RPG, so we're pretty late on creating a print character sheet. This is mainly because the Character Creator is so versatile, we haven't needed one! But in anticipation of printed book versions of the game, the OSR+ printed physical character sheet included in any books will be accompanied by a PDF you can export from any hero created with the Character Creator, designed for print in black and white.
It's tough to get started with a new system, so our free quickstart rules will include cheat sheets for both players and GMs, an abridged core rulesbook (in PDF form and on the website), and a sample adventure called Faht Bottom Inn that introduces players to the core mechanics.
This introductory adventure is designed after the principles for adventure design outlined in the Game Master's Guide and introduces players to the basic mechanics of OSR+, such as attribute checks, success checks, scene checks, encounters, and downtime action. Download the adventure as a free PDF as part of the OSR+ Quickstart Rules on the "Getting Started" section of the website along with free cheat sheets for GMs and players. The fully illustrated print book includes expanded annotations for GMs and assets for virtual tabletop software such as Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo and explains how Faht Bottom Inn can be a segue into adventures in the Quest of Queens campaign setting.
The ultimate dream for OSR+ is a fully illustrated hardcover book that includes all the Core Fantasy Rules (inclusive of the armors, classes, kits, conflicts, cultures, ethos, flaws, maleficence, origins, shields, skill, stances, and weapons from the core rules), a bestiary, a treasure compendium, a print character sheet, and complete spellbook. The book would contain everything you need to play the game without using the Character Creator or any digital tools.
This fully illustrated, physical tome expands the advice offered in the Game Master's Guide on the OSR+ website, planned as a hardcover release with additional tools for game masters who want to run games in OSR+. This book will include an annotated sample adventure called Faht Bottom Inn that introduces players to the game and serves as an optional segue into the Quest of Queens campaign setting.
A fully illustrated sourcebook for the Quest of Queens campaign setting, a World of OSR+. The book features lore about the setting, a library of adventure hooks, and rules unique to the setting (such as archetypes, cultures, and monsters). Any unique rules introduced by the book become accessible to premium subscribers in the Character Creator and other digital tools to create heroes and NPCs. Additionally, every World of OSR+ includes a sample campaign, sample heroes, and assets for virtual tabletops such as Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo.
Website Features
We want the OSR+ website to be fully accessible to blind and other visitors with disabilities. This massive undertaking requires technical scrutiny of every aspect of the website, from the Character Creator, to reference tables, and other digital assets.
A enhancement for sheets created with the Character Creator, this premium digital tool will allow you to roll 3D dice so you can trigger rolls by clicking mechanics right from your sheet.
A fully featured virtual assistant for premium subscribers, similar to D&D Beyond's Avrae, that allows Discord users to trigger mechanics from the game and call up character sheets from the website.
As the costs for AI go down, we plan to train a LLM (large language model) on our core rules, so that you can chat with it for rulings and other help directly in the site.
For premium subscribers, we plan to have alternative site themes accompany the release of other core rules, such as Core Scifi, and Core Modern, as well as themes built for readability and efficiency such as "Old School style" and "Minimalist."
Actual Play & Video
We have hundreds of hours of recordings of episodes of Dungeons & Flagons in our archives, which our tireless video editor Jon Parsons has been using to create a bevy of shorts on YouTube for the past year. We plan to release full-length D&F episodes from our backlog as well as publish new recordings on our YouTube channel.
These short, 3-minute clips demonstrate why players of all sorts of unique backgrounds play RPGs, and what makes OSR+ special.
These quick, 1-minute clips each demonstrate a single mechanic, with examples from previous actual plays, released on a regular schedule from our backlog of over 500+ hours of recordings. The videos will also be embedded in the core rules on the website as in-context examples of mechanics.
