Philosopher's Stone

Description

This legendary stone looks like an ordinary piece of coal but contains powerful magic. You may activate the item by touching it to a mundane material to transmute it into gold, or elevate the purity of a subtance by a single degree (filthy water becomes potable, water becomes wine, etc). The strength of the item determines the volume of material that can be transformed: 1) personal, 2) melee, 3) encounter. When cracked open, the stone contains a mercury-like substance. Roll a d6 upon the item's first discovery to determine its function: 1-4) you can use the substance in a forge to transmute a mundane object into a magical one (up to a personal volume in size); 5) the substance increases the imbiber's lifespan by a factor of the stone's strength; or 6) it can resurrect the freshly dead.
